Consumer Whining Kills Polar Bear Cans
December 1, 2011
Coca-Cola announced today that it would be freezing production of their awesome, white, limited-edition, arctic cans because of consumer complaints. Apparently people sent emails, made phone calls, and used their social media arsenal to voice their anger. Their main reproach? The white can was too hard to distinguish from Diet Coke.
Hm… Doesn’t Diet Coke say “Diet Coke” in really big letters? Come on people.
I find this particularly sad because the white Coke cans were part of a campaign to highlight the threat that global warming poses to polar bears’ habitats. The cans also had a message asking consumers to make a $1 text donation to the WWF, all donations (up to $1 million) would have been matched by Coca-Cola. This is on top of a $2 million initial donation by the company to the conservation organization.
As consumers we should be rewarding companies that make bold moves in the right direction, not shutting them down because we’re too lazy to read.
